The Perfect Love of God: The Prodigal Son
Luke 15:20–24 · Pastor James Abraham

Sermon Overview

In one of Jesus' most powerful parables, we see the heart of a Father who never stops watching, never stops waiting, and runs to meet us before we even finish our apology. This message unpacks the story of the Prodigal Son not as a story about a wayward child — but as a portrait of God's relentless, restoring love.

Key Points

Love gives freedom. The father allowed the son to leave — God's love does not force, but it always hopes for return. (Luke 15:12)
The far country leads to emptiness. Life away from God — seeking joy, identity, and purpose apart from Him — always ends in bondage. What looks like freedom becomes a prison.
Repentance is awakening, not just regret. "He came to himself." True repentance always leads back to the Father. (Luke 15:17)
God ran first. While the son was still far off, the father ran to him. God's grace meets us before our action. (Luke 15:20)
The Father restores, not just forgives. The robe, ring, sandals, and celebration were not necessities — they were expressions of a love that fully restores.
God celebrates our return. Heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents. Restoration is never hidden — God celebrates it. (Luke 15:7)

Reflection Question

"Is there an area of your life where you have wandered into a far country? The Father is already watching the road — what would it look like to come home today?"

"But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him."
Luke 15:20
